Matteo Berrettini, semifinal in Vienna fades: Khachanov wins in two sets
The semifinal dream è faded.
Matteo Berrettini is stopped in the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna, where to beat him è Karen Khachanov. The Russian won in just two sets, with a score of 6-1, 6-4, and advanced in the draw on the opposite side from Lorenzo Musetti. The latter, however, will face Jack Draper in the semifinals.
Berrettini’s evening turned out to be complicated almost immediately: already in the second game he lost his serve, after nullifying no less than four break points to Khachanov, who, however, exploited the fifth. Complicated also turns out to be the only point that the Roman manages to win in the first set: in the fourth game after four more break points canceled. The Russian’s second break makes it 5-1 and effectively addresses the set once and for all.
Greater proved to be the struggle in the second set, which flew quickly to 4-3 in Berrettini’s favor without any particular jolt. Khachanov struggled to even the score in the next game, only to take another break that earned him an overtake at 5-4, which the Italian could no longer recover.
In the previous hours it was as mentioned Musetti who had achieved a real feat, beating world number three Alexander Zverev in a comeback with a score of 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, after a battle that lasted almost three hours. Crucial in particular was his resilience in the second part of the second set, after resisting his opponent’s recovery until winning the tie-break.
