Roma-Lazio derby likely to be postponed because of… Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner could, indirectly, influence the timing of the Capital derby. The match between Roma and Lazio scheduled for the penultimate day of the championship on the weekend of May 17, in fact, coincides with the finals (singles and doubles) of the Internazionali d’Italia at the Foro Italico, close to the Olympic stadium.

For this reason, the Viminale has asked to postpone the match to Monday, May 18, at 6 p.m., so as to facilitate the management of public order on a weekend that promises to be very high in attendance. Also weighing in are the historical tensions between the two fans, which make the simultaneous timing of the two events particularly delicate.

The postponement hypothesis has already been submitted to the clubs, which have reportedly expressed opposition, but it remains on the table given the organizational complexity and the massive deployment of law enforcement required. A possible advance to Saturday also presents critical issues.

There is also no shortage of concerns for fans: Monday afternoon would represent an inconvenient time, since it is a working day. Excluded instead is the evening option of 8:45 p.m., already discarded by the Viminale after the serious incidents in January 2025, which even led to the anticipation of the derby at lunchtime.

The evaluations are still in progress, also in light of the inconveniences recorded last year between the outflow of spectators at the Foro Italico and that of fans at the Olimpico on the occasion of Lazio-Juventus. Should a daytime derby be confirmed in the same context, public order management could be even more complex.
