As communicated by World Athletics, Allyson Felix is aiming for a historic return to the track. In fact, after her announced retirement in 2022, the U.S. champion is reportedly preparing an ambitious project: to participate in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games at the age of 43. It would be her sixth Olympics, following those in Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

The plan, called ‘Project Six,’ represents more than just a challenge for the seven-time Olympic champion. In fact, the now returning former sprinter explained, to Time, the initiative as ‘an experiment in human potential’ and a symbolic return in front of a home audience where she has never competed at the Games.

Behind her will once again be her longtime coach Bobby Kersee, who also oversees Olympic champion and 400 hurdles recordwoman Sydney McLaughlin. The program is scheduled to begin in October 2026, with a return to competition expected in 2027.

The stated goal is qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games, a goal that will necessarily go through the U.S. Trials, known to be among the most competitive selections in the world. However, from a technical point of view, the most feasible path would be in the 400 meters or in the 4×400 relay, where getting into the group of the best is still a tough challenge, also because it must be remembered that the American has not competed in four years, a lot for an athlete.

But nothing is impossible, a precedent exists: Merlene Ottey competed at the Olympics at age 44 in 2004 in the 100 meters, where she even got the semifinals.

Based on the choice is not only sporting ambition, but also a personal desire: to parade as an athlete in the opening ceremony of the Los Angeles Games: “I would be angry with myself if I didn’t try,” she said.
