Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, Simone Vagnozzi offers a surprising reading

Carlos Alcaraz’s absence from the world tennis circuit due to his wrist injury, at least until the end of Roland Garros, could turn out to be a disadvantage for Jannik Sinner: to say so, surprising more than one insider, is Simone Vagnozzi, one of the pivotal elements of the staff that follows the Italian star. At the microphones of Sky Sport, just a few hours before the Madrid Masters 1000 final, the 42-year-old coach explained what countermeasures the coaching staff is taking, together with Sinner himself, to obviate possible drops in tension.

“We have to avoid focusing on Carlos’s absence: there is one match still to be won here in Madrid, in Rome there will be six, at Roland Garros seven. The only way is to think day by day. It’s clear that the situation displeases, because no one wants to hurt a colleague, least of all Carlos with whom we have a wonderful relationship, but unfortunately it’s part of our sport.”

“Jannik has recovered as best he can after every match so far: without the main rival it’s not easier, on the contrary: there’s a bit more pressure. These guys, however, push hard every single day and it can happen to anyone: today it’s his turn, tomorrow it could be us or someone else. In every tournament there will always be some absence, it’s part of the game.”

Beyond the result in the final in Madrid against Alexander Zverev, Jannik Sinner has shown great concentration in every match, reacting effectively to the difficulties encountered. The goal is clear: to arrive at Roland Garros in the best possible condition, to complete the Career Grand Slam and further strengthen the lead in the ATP rankings, which in any case will see Sinner ahead of everyone at least until the Wimbledon tournament, which will be played as per tradition in July.

Alcaraz, on the other hand, will almost certainly return at the beginning of the season on grass precisely to take revenge against Sinner in the London tournament. The Murcian, complicit with the wrist problem, will also use the long stop to regain energy in a so far intense tennis season for the best on the circuit.
