Roland Garros, fear for Hailey Baptiste: audience dismayed, father rushes onto court

Roll Garros 2026 loses Hailey Baptiste, an American tennis player who was experiencing at least until now the best moment of her professional career. In fact, the 2001-born athlete was forced to retire during the second round against Wang Xiyu after a serious injury to her left knee, an episode that froze the crowd on Court 6 and left the Washington native in tears as she was wheeled away in a wheelchair by the medical staff on the sidelines.
The dynamics were as sudden as they were dramatic. At 5-4 for Wang in the first set, Baptiste tried to hit a forehand move just back: in her support, her left knee seemed to give way suddenly, causing her to collapse to the ground amid screams of pain that dumbfounded those present. Doctors’ intervention was immediate and, in addition to her opponent, her father also rushed down from the stands to sinder about her condition.
Baptiste, 24, was back from more than decent results: semifinals at the WTA 1000 in Madrid, victory over Aryna Sabalenka, best ranking at No. 25 and a technical and mental growth that had turned her into one of the most fit players on the circuit. In Paris she appeared as the No. 26 seed, with legitimate ambitions of going all the way. Her run, however, came to a bitter halt in the most bitter way.
The first assessments, according to French media reports, speak of a probable dislocation of the patella, which has already been repositioned in the hospital, but instrumental examinations will define the extent of the damage and the recovery time. Ligament involvement is not ruled out, although there is no official confirmation at the moment. For Baptiste, this is the second 2026 withdrawal: in Dubai, he had abandoned his debut match due to abdominal pain and discomfort in his right elbow. But the Paris injury immediately appeared to be of a completely different severity.
Pictures of the tennis player in tears as she was wheeled away in a wheelchair quickly went around the world. Thousands of messages of encouragement arrived on social media from colleagues, fans and insiders. They all hope the injury is less serious than expected and that Baptiste will soon be able to return to competition.
