What happened to Jannik Sinner? The whole world is asking that question, and social media is ablaze after the sudden collapse of the world number one, who was dominating the match valid for the second round of Roland Garros against Juan Manuel Cerundolo. The Azure was leading 5-1 in the third set after winning the first two when he had a resounding physical breakdown, probably due to the heat, that knocked him out.

“Halfway through the third set I couldn’t find any energy, I didn’t feel very good on the court. It was hot but not terribly hot,” were Sinner’s words at a press conference in Paris. “This is sports, and it can happen. It’s hard to accept, considering my position. But now there is time to recover.”

The tennis player from San Candido emphasized that recovery more than physical will have to be mental: “I need to recover mentally as well.”

“This morning I woke up after sleeping badly, I was in some pain. But it happens a lot in Slams, today was one of those days. If I hadn’t played Madrid or Rome I could still have had such a day. I won three tournaments on clay, incredible results. That was my main goal at the beginning of the year, but you don’t know if things can change had you skipped Madrid or Rome.”

Sinner will still take some tests, “We’ll see how they go but it can happen, no one is a robot or made to never make mistakes. Hopefully we will be ready for Wimbledon, we need to recover. I couldn’t pull myself out, I had no energy today.”
