When they play Matteo Berrettini and Matteo Arnaldi in the quarters of Roland Garros.

After their extraordinary victories in the round of 16 against Juan Manuel Cerundolo and Frances Tiafoe, respectively, Matteo Berrettini and Matteo Arnaldi will face each other in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros in an Italian derby that, by necessity, will leave one of the two Italian bishops with a bitter taste in his mouth, although aware, regardless of who will have to stop, that he has experienced a star journey in the Paris Slam.
The program made official by the organizers sees the “Matthew derby” scheduled in the evening session on Wednesday, June 3: the match, which will be played at the central court named after Philippe Chatrier, will begin no earlier than 8:15 p.m. and in any case at the end of the previous three matches (Anna Kalinskaya vs. Maja Chwalinska, Aryna Sabalenka vs. Diana Shnaider, and Felix Auger-Aliassime vs. Flavio Cobolli).
Between Berrettini and Arnaldi there is no precedent, but the two share a curious statistic, as they are the first tennis players outside the Top 100 to clash in the quarterfinals of a Slam: in fact, the last challenge between two such outsiders was in 1991, when Patrick McEnroe (then ranked No. 114) beat Cristiano Caratti from Piedmont, who was then ranked 101, in five sets.
Berrettini, currently number 105, and Arnaldi, now at position 104, will nevertheless go up a lot in the ATP ranking at the end of the tournament: the Roman is already certain to re-enter the top 50, the San Remo player is currently 53rd in the live ranking but has margin in his own right to make it back into the Top 50. The match will be televised and streamed by Eurosport, on subscription platforms hosted by the Warner Bros. group broadcaster. Discovery. No free-to-air broadcast of the event is planned.
