New York mayor quotes Mario Balotelli in official speech: social media explodes

The sentence lasted only a few seconds, but it was enough to set the Web on fire. During his official speech outlining how the city is preparing to host the 2026 World Cup games, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani surprised everyone by quoting none other than Mario Balotelli. It was an unexpected reference, which came while he was talking about transportation, security and logistical management of the metropolis.
The part of the speech that is bouncing all over the place is the one in which Mamdani, to explain the philosophy of “doing one’s job well without seeking applause,” recalled a phrase from the Italian striker, called on the occasion “one of the greatest in recent history.” He then quoted verbatim, “Balotelli said, ‘When I score goals I don’t exult because I’m just doing my job. Does a letter carrier by chance celebrate when he delivers letters?'”.
Hence the mayor’s parallel before the New Yorkers: “If we show that we can be organized, making sure that everything goes smoothly, will we celebrate? No, because we’re just doing our job.” An unusual juxtaposition, which immediately triggered reactions, memes and comments especially from Italy. On social media, Mamdani’s phrases went viral in a matter of minutes, dividing users between those who appreciated the quote and those who mocked the comparison.
Within a very short time, then, the message crossed American borders: the clip was re-released by Italian media, sports pages and creators, turning Mamdani into an unexpected protagonist of the online debate. The reference to Balotelli became one of the most discussed topics of the day, confirming how much a single phrase, even said in past and completely different contexts, can ignite global conversation.
