Rumors are swirling again about the much-discussed mixed doubles tournament at the US Open: following reports of a possible boycott of the event by tennis stars, including Jannik Sinner, surprising rumors are now circulating involving the Italian player, Carlos Alcaraz, and the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena.

According to the rumors, negotiations are underway to form mixed teams between the two strongest male players in the world and the Williams sisters: Venus would play with Jannik Sinner, while Serena Williams, who recently returned to the tour, would team up with Carlos Alcaraz. It has also already been confirmed that the Williams sisters will team up in the women’s doubles tournament, which they will enter thanks to a wild card.

A year ago, Sinner asked to team up with Serena in the US Open mixed doubles tournament, a wish that could not be fulfilled at the time because the younger Williams sister was still subject to anti-doping protocols, which require about six months for reinstatement on the tour. Now that the 44-year-old has officially returned to competition, the scenario has flipped: this time, she would be paired with Alcaraz, while Sinner would play with Venus.

The issue of a possible boycott of the mixed doubles tournament by the circuit’s top players remains in the background. Sinner himself spoke clearly at Roland Garros about the fight for a more equitable redistribution of Grand Slam prize money: “We know the Slams are more prestigious, but right now they’re giving us too little. We’ve been silent for too long, and the time has come to speak up. There’s an ongoing dialogue between us players and the Slams; we’re at a moment where women and men are united in demanding more respect.” The participation of the Italian and Alcaraz in the mixed doubles event, if confirmed, could therefore also signal a thaw in the ongoing standoff with the organizers.
