Virtus Bologna: Spain emerges as a potential destination for the coach

Virtus Bologna aims to resolve the coaching situation within the next few days: following Sale Djordjevic’s refusal, the club is primarily looking abroad for the Vu Nere’s next head coach. According to Il Resto del Carlino, no announcements are expected imminently, but the final decision should come by the end of next week.
Among the new names mentioned in recent hours is Alex Mumbrù, former coach of Valencia and current head coach of the German national team. A former player for Real Madrid and Bilbao, Mumbrù has been coaching Germany since 2024, leading the team to victory at the 2025 European Championships.
The list of candidates for the Bianconeri bench remains crowded, however. According to reports from Repubblica and La Prealpina, the candidates under consideration also include Jaka Lakovic, a former player for Avellino and recently a head coach at Gran Canaria for four years, and Aleksander Sekulic, who led Dubai Basketball until the end of last season. Rounding out the list are Pierric Poupet, leaving ASVEL, and Petteri Koponen, a former Virtus player himself, though bureaucratic doubts remain regarding the latter.
Djordjevic, for his part, has definitively ruled out a return to Bologna: Bahcesehir has officially announced his signing on its channels, highlighting his past stints with top-tier teams such as Bayern Munich, Fenerbahçe, Olimpia Milano, Panathinaikos, and, indeed, Virtus Bologna. The Turkish club has also recently obtained a five-year license to compete in the EuroCup, a competition that guarantees the winner a spot in the EuroLeague the following season—a prospect that was clearly a decisive factor in the Serbian coach’s decision.
