Alexander Zverev has broken the curse and won the first Grand Slam title of his career, triumphing at Roland Garros and shedding the label of “the best player never to have won a major.” Nick Kyrgios also commented on the German athlete’s success: “Seeing Sascha finally overcome that hurdle was fantastic. He’s been one of our most consistent players on the tour over the past 10 years. I mean, aside from that terrible injury he suffered and recovered from. People forget that for 99% of players, that’s a career-ending injury,” he said at a press conference in Halle.

“Coming back from that injury isn’t easy; many would be content to call it quits right there. The obsession and diligence it requires are truly incredible. I saw him briefly at the bar this morning and gave him a thumbs-up. He knows I talked about it last week during interviews, but I’m really happy for him.”

Kyrgios highlighted the difficulties his generation has faced, transitioning from the Big Three to the Sinner-Alcaraz duopoly: “I think he’s faced a lot of adversity and is one of the players who gets the most criticism and haters. I recently saw a ridiculous video talking about the ‘lost generation’—the one that was humiliated by the Big Three and then by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz—and that’s not a nice thing to hear.”

“So for him to bring a Grand Slam to that generation—and I’m thinking of himself here—I think that was an extra motivation. And I think he has the potential to win even more.”
