2026 World Cup: Cristiano Ronaldo in the Crosshairs of Haters—Social Media Becomes a Battleground

Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance in Portugal vs. the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a match valid for the first day of Group K at the 2026 World Cup that ended in a 1-1 draw, sparked a wave of reactions on social media, turning the night of his World Cup debut (his sixth in his career) into a catalyst for completely opposing reactions, especially on social media. The 41-year-old captain of Portugal remained on the field for the entire 90 minutes plus stoppage time without making an impact—a fact that immediately fueled criticism and strong opinions.
In the first half, CR7 struggled to get into the flow of the game, while in the second half he had two good chances, neither of which he converted. That was enough to spark thousands of negative comments: some argue that head coach Roberto Martínez should manage him differently, reducing his playing time, because “at 41, you can’t sustain 90 minutes of high-intensity play, especially if you’re playing in Saudi Arabia—even if your name is Ronaldo.” Others say Portugal is “forced” to play around him, with the team leaning too far forward to support him.
On the other hand, however, there is an equally united front that dismisses these accusations as “pure hate.” According to this view, it wasn’t Ronaldo who disappointed: it was the entire Portuguese team that played below par, lacking ideas and adequate support for their offensive leader. From this perspective, singling out CR7 would be “an easy way to find a scapegoat.”
The debate remains open and will likely follow the Portuguese national team at least through its next two group-stage matches: against Uzbekistan on June 23 and Colombia on the night of June 28–29 (Italian time). Only then will it become clear whether this was simply an off night or a sign of a difficult World Cup for one of the players who has left his mark on the world of soccer over the past two decades.
