The soccer world is in mourning: Alex Hughes has died at age 38

Alex Hughes, son of Manchester United legend Mark Hughes, has died at the age of just 38. For several years, he had served as head of scouting and player recruitment for Grimsby Town Football Club.

Here is the statement from the English club: “The entire Grimsby Town Football Club is deeply devastated by the news of the sudden and unexpected passing of Alex Hughes, Head of Scouting and Player Recruitment.”

“Alex was a devoted husband, a proud father, a beloved son and brother, a cherished friend, and a highly valued and esteemed member of the Grimsby Town family. Having come up through the ranks of the Mariners in 2025, Alex quickly became a highly respected figure within the club. Working closely with Head Coach David Artell and the coaching staff, he played a crucial role in shaping the club’s transfer strategy and supporting the continued growth of the men’s first team.”

“Prior to joining Grimsby Town, Alex had built a solid career in the world of soccer, ranging from match analysis to scouting and sports agency work. His professional career has seen him work with clubs such as Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, AFC Fylde, and Morecambe, earning him a reputation as a dedicated professional with an extraordinary knowledge of the game.”

“Beyond his professional achievements, Alex was deeply respected by everyone who knew him. His warmth, professionalism, and sunny disposition left an indelible mark on the club and the entire soccer community.”

In the words of President Andrew Pettit: “Everyone at Grimsby Town Football Club is shocked and saddened by the news of Alex’s passing.
