The sports world is mourning the death of two-time Slovak Olympian Denisa Baránková, who died at the age of just 24 after being struck by a car in a tragic traffic accident in Bratislava. According to reports, the athlete was involved in a serious collision while on Osuského Street in the Petržalka neighborhood. A vehicle—a BMW X5 driven by a 42-year-old man—reportedly struck both Baránková and an 11-year-old girl.

The archer was rushed to Kramáre Hospital, where she died the following day due to her severe injuries. Slovak authorities have launched an investigation to accurately reconstruct the circumstances of the accident. The girl involved in the same collision suffered chest and head injuries, as well as a fractured femur, but her condition is not life-threatening.

Denisa Baránková was one of the rising stars of international archery. She had represented Slovakia at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics, becoming the first athlete from her country to qualify for the World Games. It was at the World Games, held in Chengdu in 2025, that she won the gold medal in recurve archery—a victory hailed as one of the brightest moments of her career.

The news of her death has deeply saddened the international sports community. A spokesperson for the World Games remembered Baránková as “one of archery’s brightest prospects,” highlighting the dedication, talent, and passion that set her apart. Messages of condolence were also extended to her family, her husband Vladimír Hurban Jr., and the Slovak Archery Federation, while the international sports community united in grief over her sudden and untimely passing.
