The rules for the 2026 World Cup stipulate that, in addition to the top two teams from each of the twelve groups, the eight best third-place teams will also qualify. In the event that two or more teams finish the group stage tied on points, the standings are determined through a three-step process.

The first stage considers only head-to-head results, evaluating, in order, points earned, goal difference, and goals scored in those matches. If the tie persists, the second stage considers all group matches, comparing the overall goal difference, total goals scored, and the Fair Play points based on cards received. As a last resort, the decision is based on the team’s position in the latest FIFA Ranking.

As for identifying the eight best third-place teams to be repêchaged, the selection is made by compiling a comparative ranking that takes into account overall performance throughout the group stage. The order of preference begins with a comparison of the total points earned by each national team.

Next, the overall goal difference is analyzed, followed by the total number of goals scored. If the tie persists, the Fair Play score—based on the conduct of players and officials—is evaluated.

In the extreme case where two or more third-place teams have identical statistics in each of these parameters, the final decision is made based on the most recent FIFA Ranking.
