2026 World Cup: War on the Haters: “Unacceptable Racist Comments”

The Netherlands’ elimination on penalty kicks against Morocco in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup left more than just a sense of sporting disappointment in Amsterdam and the surrounding area. In the hours following the match, the Dutch Football Association explained that it had observed, online, several insults directed at some players on the Oranje national team, who were targeted by racist and discriminatory comments.
“We thank the players, the staff, and everyone involved for their commitment during this World Cup. We also express our gratitude to the fans: at the stadium, at home, and wherever the Oranje team was followed and supported. Soccer unites people, regardless of origin or background,” reads the statement, which began with a message of gratitude to the most respectful fans.
Then came the strong statement: “We are seeing reactions online in which some players are being targeted with unacceptable racist and discriminatory comments following the elimination. On this point, we are unequivocal. Racism and discrimination have no place anywhere: not in soccer, not online, and not in everyday life.”
A clear stance, coming at a delicate moment not only in terms of the relationship with fans online but also from a sporting perspective. In another statement released almost simultaneously, the KNVB confirmed that Ronald Koeman will not renew his contract and will step down as head coach of the Oranje.
