Jannik Sinner Shines at Night, Advances to the Quarterfinals at Wimbledon

Jannik Sinner continues his run at Wimbledon and advances to the quarterfinals thanks to a three-set victory over Shintaro Mochizuki. The defending champion defeated the Japanese player 6-3, 7-6(0), 6-4 after 2 hours and 25 minutes of play, notching his third consecutive victory without dropping a single set or losing his serve. The world No. 1 didn’t play his best match of the season—as evidenced by his 33 unforced errors—but he still managed to handle the key moments of the match against the ATP No. 151, the tournament’s biggest surprise.
In the first set, Sinner immediately saved a break point in the opening game and took control of the match with two breaks that allowed him to close it out 6-3. The second set was much more evenly matched: Mochizuki earned another break point early on and, in the eighth game, managed to save three break points. At 4-4, the Italian requested that the roof on Center Court be closed due to weather conditions, and the match resumed shortly afterward indoors.
The tight contest inevitably led to a tiebreak, but here Sinner’s superiority shone through as he dominated the set with a decisive 7-0 victory, sealing the match’s outcome. In the third set, the South Tyrolean star started strong, taking a 2-0 lead. Mochizuki tried to fight back and, at 3-2, earned three break points, all of which were authoritatively saved by the Italian. In the closing stages, Sinner broke the Japanese player’s serve again and closed out the set 6-4.
In the quarterfinals, the player from Sesto Pusteria will face Jan-Lennard Struff, who reached this stage of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career after Hubert Hurkacz retired during the fifth set. At stake is a spot in the semifinals, where the winner will face either Felix Auger-Aliassime or Novak Djokovic.
