The soccer world is mourning the death of Jayden Adams, a midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and the South African national team, who was also set to play in the 2026 World Cup. The death of the soccer player, born in 2001, was confirmed in the last few hours, but the cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.

Adams began his career with Stellenbosch, quickly establishing himself as one of the most promising talents in South African soccer. In January 2025, he joined Mamelodi Sundowns, one of the country’s most prestigious clubs based in Pretoria, taking another significant step forward in his professional career.

The tragedy is all the more heartbreaking given the difficult personal circumstances the midfielder was facing. Just a few weeks ago, in fact, he had lost his grandmother, Marianna Adams, who passed away at the age of 72 on June 17—just twenty-four hours before South Africa’s opening match against the Czech Republic in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, played in Atlanta.

Despite his family’s loss, Adams chose to remain available for the national team, delivering a top-level performance throughout the tournament. His contribution was instrumental in the Bafana Bafana’s historic run, as they qualified for the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time ever. The journey came to an end in the Round of 16 with a 1-0 loss to Canada, one of the tournament’s host nations. Adams started in the first two matches of the tournament, reaffirming his central role in the South African national team’s lineup.

The South African Footballers’ Union (SAFPU) expressed deep condolences, remembering the player with an emotional message: “SAFPU is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and the South African national team, Bafana Bafana. Jayden had represented South Africa until recently at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the nation’s hopes on his shoulders with pride, courage, and distinction.”

The statement goes on to highlight the void left by the player: “His passing is an immeasurable loss for his family, teammates, clubs, the world of soccer, and the entire country. We extend our deepest condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana, and all those whose lives were touched by his presence.”
