A six-game suspension, later reduced to four, for Niccolò Cannone: the ruling by the Nations Championship Disciplinary Commission (FPRC) was issued on Tuesday, seventy-two hours after the Florentine national team player was sent off during the match in Wellington, which Italy lost 47-17 to New Zealand. The red card, confirmed by the “bunker” following a review request by French referee Luc Ramos, had already divided fans; the debate became even more heated after the FPRC’s decision.

As reported in a statement from Federugby, the red card received on the field was deemed correct, and the infraction was assessed with a base penalty of six matches. Given the player’s admission of guilt and other mitigating factors—including a disciplinary record without serious prior incidents—the suspension was reduced to four matches. Cannone will therefore miss Australia vs. Italy (July 18, 2026), Benetton vs.Zebre vs. Parma (September 4, 2026), Black Lion vs. Benetton (September 12, 2026), and Benetton vs. Dragons (September 25, 2026).

The decision, as was to be expected, has reignited the debate between the two sides, which had already been heatedly discussing the matter—especially on social media—in the wake of the match against the All Blacks. On one side are the fans opposed to the decision, convinced that the suspension is excessive and that Cannone’s tackle did not warrant such a severe penalty, even on the field. For them, the red card confirmed by the “bunker” was too harsh a judgment, compounded by an interpretation of the rules deemed far too strict.

On the other hand, however, there are those—even among Italian fans—who approve of the Nations Championship Disciplinary Commission’s hard line and consider the decision necessary to protect safety on the field. In this regard, however, these same fans are calling for consistency in the assessment of other similar incidents, to maintain uniformity in judgment and protect the integrity of the game.
