Inter Transfer Market: Sensational Move for the Argentine World Cup Star

Inter Transfer News: In addition to Lautaro Martinez, a key player for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup could also make a sensational move to Inter ahead of next season. The deal, which hasn’t been publicly discussed in recent weeks, could be facilitated by a coaching change at his current club, which is already making moves to find a replacement. In Roberto De Zerbi’s new Tottenham, in fact, Cristian Romero seems destined to be left out of the lineup. And the team that could take advantage of this is none other than Inter.

According to reports from ‘DAZN,’ De Zerbi has already made it clear that Romero does not fit into his tactical plans at Tottenham. The Spurs, after all, have already signed two new defenders: Jean Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi. Inter would like to take advantage of the situation, especially given the excellent impression the Argentine center-back has made in the past in Serie A during his stints with Genoa and Atalanta. There appears to be a willingness from London to negotiate, but the real problem is the cost: having been purchased by Atalanta in 2022 for 53 million (he had played in the Premier League on loan the previous year), the English club would not want to book a loss on the transfer. Keeping him on the roster but on the fringes of the team would, however, risk devaluing him further, and it is precisely this detail that gives Beppe Marotta hope of securing a discount.

Yet, in terms of on-field performance, Romero more than rose to the occasion when called upon at the 2026 World Cup. The defender was one of the key players in Argentina’s run in the tournament, helping the Albiceleste’s defense hold strong all the way to the semifinals: Scaloni’s team eliminated Switzerland in extra time in the quarterfinals, with Lautaro Martinez—his possible future teammate at Inter—among the decisive goal scorers. Argentina will now face England in the semifinal scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, in Atlanta—a stage that could further boost Romero’s market value.

Romero’s fate at Tottenham, however, seemed to have been sealed some time ago. As early as February, rumors were circulating that the Spurs wanted to part ways with the Argentine defender, partly due to some controversial statements Romero himself had made against the London club’s management. The club had therefore begun making moves early on, identifying Marcos Senesi—who was subsequently signed—as the ideal candidate to take over his role. This strategic planning now effectively paves the way for his departure.

At Inter, meanwhile, the transfer market is proceeding in fits and starts. The Nerazzurri management is also grappling with the search for a reinforcement on the right flank, after the Khalaili and Palestra leads both turned out to be dead ends. Marotta, therefore, finds himself having to manage multiple fronts simultaneously, and the need to keep overall transfer costs in check could also impact the negotiations for Romero. The Nerazzurri president’s goal remains to exploit Tottenham’s position of weakness to secure favorable terms, avoiding an excessive outlay for a player whom the Spurs have, in effect, already phased out of their plans.
