Milan: Fabio Capello Is Already Uncompromising With Ruben Amorim
In an article in *La Gazzetta dello Sport*, Fabio Capello shared his first impressions of Ruben Amorim’s Milan: they aren’t positive. The former Rossoneri coach feels the team is still adrift, with less than two weeks to go before the start of the season: “Milan gives me the impression of a construction site—all that’s missing is the ‘Work in Progress’ sign. And yet the start of Serie A is just around the corner.”
Capello is particularly concerned about the defense: “It must be clear that there’s a world of difference between philosophy and practice. High pressing, an attacking mindset, and the desire to dominate are all great concepts, but they require the right mindset and months of work. The latest friendly against Chelsea, for example, showed us that the coach’s ideas, as things stand, can expose the defense to dangerous situations. At times, I had the feeling that the opponent was being given the classic ‘please, make yourself at home’ treatment.”
““I get the impression there’s a bit of confusion among the Rossoneri, starting with Leao’s situation,” he continued. “Rafa overestimated himself by publicly calling out the Premier League, and if he were to stay, I’d be watching San Siro’s reaction closely the first time he fails to deliver. I hope that the next meeting between Cardinale and Amorim will bring some order and give the transfer market the right boost in the final twenty days.”
According to Capello, “Milan needs to regain its Italian soul. That’s why I hope Camarda, Comotto (a very interesting young player), Bartesaghi, and Torriani stay on the roster.” Don Fabio did not appreciate Maignan and Rabiot’s extended vacations at all: “I didn’t like this news at all.”
Leao’s situation remains, in fact, one of the most complicated issues of the Rossoneri’s summer. After publicly declaring his desire to move on before the World Cup, the Portuguese player seems to have partially changed his mind upon returning from the tournament, partly due to the presence of his compatriot Amorim on the bench. The only concrete offer received by Milan is from Galatasaray, currently at 35 million euros: a figure deemed absolutely insufficient by the club, which has no intention of selling its No. 10 for less than 60 million and is not even open to loan deals.
As for Maignan, the situation is becoming increasingly complicated. The goalkeeper, who has removed all references to Milan from his social media profiles—just like Youssouf Fofana—seems closer to a falling-out with the club. The Rossoneri captain will not return to Milanello until August 16—one week before the start of the season—a move that has sparked reactions from fans on social media. Many are calling for the captain’s armband to be reassigned to Luka Modric.
