Cycling World Championships: Gold for Italy in the mixed team time trial!

Italy’s first gold medal at the World Cycling Championships currently taking place in Montreal, Canada: in the mixed team time trial, the Italian team finished 8 seconds ahead of France and 19 seconds ahead of Switzerland, completing the 40.6 km course in 51’32”.

Filippo Ganna, Matteo Sobrero, Mattia Cattaneo, Elisa Longo Borghini, Vittoria Guazzini, and Monica Trinca Colonel, led by Marco Villa, surged into the lead at the second intermediate checkpoint and proved unstoppable for their rivals, who practically never had a chance to win.

On Monday, Nicolas Milesi won the silver medal in the Under-23 individual time trial after completing the 31.3-kilometer course in 37’33”17, just 7”01 behind the new world champion, Dutchman Ryan Gal, who won in 37’26”16. Spain’s Hector Alvarez finished third, 11”88 behind.

“When you come so close—seven seconds is really very little in a race of this length—there’s still a bit of regret. I’m happy with my performance and the silver medal, but my goal was gold,” said the young Italian champion.
