The boxing world is mourning the death of Tony Cesay, who passed away at the age of 58 after a long battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Among his best achievements are surely winning the NAC national title in the 67 kg category in 1999 and participating in the Four Nations tournament in the same year.

This is the statement released by the British boxing federation: “We express our deep condolences on the passing of Tony Cesay, a historical figure in East London boxing, who passed away at the age of 58 after facing Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis with great courage. Tony was an all-around boxing man, capable of making his mark at every level of the sport.”

“As a gifted amateur, he reached the international stage with the Repton Boxing Club, proudly representing Team British. Among his most notable achievements are participation in the Commonwealth Games, winning the NAC national title in the 67 kg category in 1999, and appearing in the British selection for the Four Nations tournament.”

Along with his competitive career, Cesay embarked on the coaching path, distinguishing himself early on in the corner as well. His first successes came with the Peacock ABC, and he later founded the Omnibus Amateur Boxing Club, becoming a focal point in raising young people and supporting the local community. Athletes he mentored include such later established boxers as Anthony Yarde and Ohara Davies. His name also remains inextricably linked to Repton ABC, where he will always be remembered as a true legend of the club.

Considered by many a tireless mentor, Cesay dedicated his life to helping others through boxing. His guiding principle, “Boxing is Love,” was at the heart of everything he did: sport not only as a means of training champions in the ring, but also as a tool to educate, support and inspire young people in life. Cesay’s legacy will live on in the many people he influenced, the boxers he helped train and the communities he strengthened.
