Stellar and revolutionary soccer or criterion-free spectacle favored by defensive disasters? The debate over the semi-final first leg between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich is inflaming social media: there are those who extol the unrestrained and tactical spectacle between Luis Enrique’s team and Vincent Kompany’s, and those who are much more skeptical and concerned about the turn modern soccer is taking.

Among the latter there is also an old acquaintance of Italian soccer, former AC Milan star Clarence Seedorf, who spoke about the match at Sky microphones as follows: “I think there has to be a balance. I’m absolutely in favor of the fact that when you have the ball, you play attacking soccer, you try to go forward even without having so many men in the area. But you also need balance in the defensive phase.”

“Imagine being PSG, scoring five goals against one of the best teams in the world … and risking staying at home and watching the final because you were too open, because you conceded too many easy chances. There has to be a limit,” the former Dutch national continued.

“How many balls did we see today behind the full-backs, with the central defenders simply watching without moving? These are basic things that anyone at this level should know, we used to learn it when we were 10 years old,” is the former midfielder’s criticism.

Seedorf even sees Arsenal now as the favorite team for the final Champions League win: “If I have to point to one team now that will really be able to take it home, just because of their ability … I say Arsenal. But Simeone’s Atletico also has chances.”
