Giro d'Italia: Lavik surprises sprinters in Milan

Fredrik Dversnes Lavik won the 15th stage of the Giro d’Italia, a flat stage starting in Voghera and finishing in Milan. Surprisingly imposing not one of the sprinters but the Fredrik Uno-X Mobility rider, who started in the breakaway at the beginning of the stage with three other riders.

Despite the attempts of the peloton, the four matched perfectly and managed to maintain their advantage despite the unfavorable and sprinter-friendly course, playing the victory among themselves in the sprint: the Norwegian Lavik preceded Mirco Maestri of Polti VisitMalta and Martin Marcellusi of Bardiani. Fourth was Mattia Bais, the other rider in the breakaway of the first hour, while the bunch sprint was won by Paul Magnier.

No change in the general classification, with times being taken at the start of the last lap, with 16 kilometers to go. Jonas Vingegaard is still pink jersey with a margin of more than two minutes over Afonso Eulalio.

So Lavik after the finish: “I had great help from my breakaway companions, they were really strong. I knew there was a chance for success today. At the five-minute mark, I started to really believe. We worked together until the end and now here I am. It was really nice to see Thor Hushovd, my manager, overjoyed after the finish. It’s a great victory for the team in our first Giro d’Italia.” Now a rest day, Tuesday will start again with the 16th stage, Bellinzona-Cari.

Danish Visma-Lease a Bike Vingegaard took the pink jersey on Saturday at the end of the 14th stage with a climbing finish in Pila, Valle d’Aosta, where he beat Austrian Felix Gall by 49″ and Jai Hindley by 58″. It was his third stage win in this Giro, following victories on Blockhaus and Corno alle Scale.
