Kimi Antonelli retires, Toto Wolff is furious

A Sunday to forget for Kimi Antonelli: the Mercedes driver spun out with four laps to go in the Barcelona Grand Prix after overtaking his teammate George Russell, who went on to finish second behind Lewis Hamilton.

At the end of the race, Toto Wolff was in a terrible mood: “It’s unacceptable to lose cars like this. George in Montreal, Kimi today. I’m very angry; I’m not happy with our strategy: we’ve lost twice,” he thundered.

Kimi Antonelli himself was obviously very disappointed as well: “I feel a bit empty inside. It’s a shame because I was going really fast; our weak point is reliability. From what I understand, the problem I had seems to be the same as Russell’s in Canada. Today it’s nobody’s fault—these things happen—but we have to keep working because we lost important points. I’m still satisfied with my race and my pace, though.”

Here’s what George Russell had to say: “It was a tough race; it’s great to be back on the podium after driving a clean race. Ferrari was very strong today—congratulations to them and to Lewis Hamilton. Yesterday it was a surprise to see our rivals so strong; they’ll certainly be a threat in the upcoming races as well.”
