Cantù, De Nicolao at a crossroads: Sassari is a real possibility, but it’s not the only one

Andrea De Nicolao’s time with Pallacanestro Cantù appears to be drawing to a close. The point guard, born in 1991, is coming off a Serie A season in which he averaged 4.2 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in about 17 minutes of playing time, and is now evaluating his options for the future, with several clubs interested in adding him to their roster.

According to a report by ‘La Prealpina’, the most likely destination is Dinamo Sassari, which would like to place him under coach Luca Vitali to round out the backcourt with an experienced, reliable player capable of bringing order to the team. The offer is on the table, and De Nicolao is considering a move to Serie A2 for next season.

However, Sassari isn’t the only option. Verona (for whom De Nicolao played during the 2014–2015 season) has also expressed interest, drawn by the opportunity to add an experienced point guard to its roster. Varese (another club for which De Nicolao has played), on the other hand, is taking a more low-key approach, monitoring the situation without making a bold move: De Nicolao’s name remains on the red-and-white team’s list should favorable opportunities arise.

Born in Camposampiero, in the province of Padua, on August 21, 1991, Andrea De Nicolao began his senior career with Benetton Treviso in 2009, going on to play for Lago Maggiore, Verona, Varese, Reggio Emilia, Reyer Venezia, and Cantù. His honors include one Scudetto, one Italian Cup, and one Europe Cup with Venice; one Super Cup with Reggio; and two A2 Italian Cups with Verona and Cantù. De Nicolao also played 11 games for the national team between 2012 and 2014.
