2026 World Cup: Italy’s Nemesis Eliminated; United States Advances to the Round of 16

The United States secured a spot in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup thanks to a 2-0 victory over Bosnia, the same team that had eliminated Italy in the qualifying playoffs. The team led by Mauricio Pochettino took the lead just before halftime with a goal by Folarin Balogun and sealed the victory in the 82nd minute thanks to a splendid free kick by Malik Tillman. In between, in the 64th minute, Balogun’s red card complicated the Americans’ plans.
The U.S. thus continues its journey in the World Cup on home soil. In front of the home crowd in Santa Clara, the U.S. team put on a display of character, breaking the deadlock just before halftime and then managing to hold on even while down a man. After Balogun’s red card, Bosnia increased the pressure and created several chances, but found an alert and well-organized American defense standing in their way.
Tillman put an end to Bosnia’s hopes for good, scoring the second goal in the closing minutes with a masterful free kick. This victory confirms the progress made by the national team coached by Pochettino, which was able to hold its ground in the most critical moments and strike with clinical efficiency when it really mattered.
The United States thus advances to the Round of 16, where they will face Belgium, which qualified after a comeback victory over Senegal. Bosnia’s run, meanwhile, comes to an end, as they exit the tournament after a valiant effort that was not enough to stop the hosts.
