Milan Transfer Market: Mario Gila Is Officially a Player and Already Wants It All: “I’ll Make It Worth Your While”

Milan Transfer News: Mario Gila’s move to the Rossoneri is official. On Friday, the Milan club and Lazio announced the permanent transfer of the Spanish player, who has also posed for his first photos in his new jersey (he’ll wear number 34). The deal will cost Gerry Cardinale’s club over 20 million, excluding bonuses, while the player has signed a five-season contract with an annual salary of approximately 5 million net.
“AC Milan announces that it has acquired the sporting rights of soccer player Mario Gila Fuentes from S.S. Lazio on a permanent basis. The Spanish defender has signed a contract with the Rossoneri through June 30, 2031, and will wear the number 34 jersey,” are the words with which the Rossoneri welcomed their new player on their official website, before summarizing his career, adding “a warm welcome” and wishing him “the greatest personal and team success in the Rossoneri jersey.”
“The Milan jersey carries a lot of weight,” Gila has already stated. “I’m aware of that, but I’m here to learn and give it my all on the field. The goal is to reach the levels that have made this club great. I want to help the team in every aspect; I’m a perfectionist and I never give up. Both on and off the field, I always demand the most from myself, and I want to repay the club for the trust they’ve placed in me. I’ve already spoken with Coach Ruben Amorim, and I’m very happy to have him in the locker room. This year, we’re going for it all.”
On the financial front, the structure of the deal is more complex than it appears. The total transfer fee amounts to 30 million euros thanks to the inclusion of easily attainable bonuses and the transfer of Lorenzo Calvani, a left-back from Lazio’s Primavera team valued at 2.5 million euros in a separate deal. It’s also worth noting that 50% of the proceeds due to Lazio will be transferred to Real Madrid, pursuant to the agreements signed when the Spanish player was transferred from the Blancos to the Biancocelesti. With Gila and the earlier signing of Gonçalo Ramos, Milan has invested a total of approximately 100 million euros in transfer fees alone, reflecting the ambitious new strategy championed by Gerry Cardinale.
The negotiations were not without obstacles. Lazio president Claudio Lotito had initially rejected the Rossoneri’s first offer of 25 million euros, firmly demanding that it reach 30 million. The decisive breakthrough came thanks to a meeting at Casa Milan between player trading director Hendrik Almstadt and Alejandro Camaño, the defender’s agent, who had also stopped by Formello the previous day to discuss the matter with Lazio’s management. Milan thus decided to raise its offer, meeting the Roman club’s demands and quickly leading to an agreement.
Gila’s arrival also feels like a jab at Napoli. The Azzurri had been pursuing the defender for weeks without managing to reach an agreement with Lazio, and on the very day Massimiliano Allegri was officially announced as Napoli’s new coach, Milan pulled off the decisive move. For the Tuscan coach, who had identified Gila as a top priority to bolster the back line, it was a bitter welcome to his new adventure: Napoli was left empty-handed, forced to shift its focus to other targets to strengthen its defense.
With Gila firmly on the roster, Milan can now focus on its other transfer priorities. However, Christian Pulisic’s injury—which will sideline him for several weeks due to a microfracture in the tibia and fibula sustained while playing for the U.S. at the World Cup—has forced the Rossoneri management to revise their plans, making the search for a new offensive utility player urgent. The names on the club’s list include Kerim Alajbegovic, owned by Bayer Leverkusen and fresh off an excellent World Cup with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kostantinos Karetsas, a talented 2007-born player from Genk who recorded 18 assists last season; both are valued between 35 and 40 million euros.
