2026 World Cup: Thibaut Courtois’s Drama—His U.S. Adventure Ends in Tears

Drama at the 2026 World Cup for one of the most decorated players to compete in the United States. Thibaut Courtois was forced to leave the quarterfinal match against Spain in tears. The Belgian goalkeeper was forced to leave the field at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood (near Los Angeles) in the 71st minute with the score tied at 1-1. A problem with his left quadriceps proved to be his undoing, as it did not subside even after the hydration break. Despite attempts by head coach Rudi Garcia and his teammates to console him, the Real Madrid goalkeeper was replaced by Senne Lammens, born in 2002.
The young Belgian goalkeeper, called upon to shoulder a massive burden at a crucial moment in the tournament, is no stranger to the European scene. Lammens had already caught the attention of Manchester United, which had been following him with interest before turning its focus to other prospects—confirming that his talents were already well known far beyond Belgium’s borders. It was all for naught at the 2026 World Cup, however, as he himself conceded the goal in the 88th minute to the “usual” Mikel Merino, who secured yet another victory for Spain after having already decided the highly tense match against Portugal.
Courtois’s exit was a massive blow to the Red Devils, who up to that point had managed to hold their own against the Red Fury. Belgium’s journey in this World Cup had been anything but smooth: after an extremely difficult start in the group stage, with a 1-1 draw against Egypt and a 0-0 draw against Iran, Garcia’s team turned things around with a decisive 5-1 victory over New Zealand, before experiencing the thrill of extra time against Senegal, coming back from a 0-2 deficit to win 3-2 thanks to a brace by Tielemans and a goal by Lukaku.
Qualification for the quarterfinals then came with greater conviction, thanks to a 4-1 victory over the host United States in the round of 16. In that match, it was Courtois himself who conceded the temporary equalizer by Malik Tillman on a free kick, before De Ketelaere scored his second goal of the game and Vanaken and Lukaku sealed the victory. Even then, Courtois had already been dealing with the physical toll of a grueling tournament.
What makes the situation even more bitter for Garcia is the context in which the injury occurred: the French coach, who had celebrated alongside his wife, Francesca Brienza, in the stands at Lumen Stadium after the victory over the U.S., immediately found himself having to manage the emergency in goal at the most critical moment of the entire competition, with a spot in the semifinals on the line against a Spanish team that, despite a few lackluster performances, had yet to lose a match in this World Cup. And, in fact, Spain ultimately managed to prevail once again thanks to Merino.
