Juventus Transfer Market: Another Twist in the Goalkeeper Situation—Suzuki Is Moving Away from PSG

The dramatic turn of events came on August 15: Barring any major last-minute reversals, Zion Suzuki will no longer be signing with Paris Saint-Germain. The demands made by the Japanese player’s agents have irritated the French club, which has decided to call off the deal it had been negotiating with Parma. This deal would have gone beyond purely competitive considerations.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa—the Birmingham-based club seeking a replacement for Emiliano Martinez, known as “Dibu”—has entered the fray for the Japanese goalkeeper, who is also being tracked by Juventus, which had already been prepared to secure him on loan for a season from the Eiffel Tower club.

Negotiations between PSG and Parma seemed to be in the final stages: the European champions had reached an agreement with the Emilia-Romagna club for approximately 35 million euros for the Japanese goalkeeper’s transfer. The agreement also included a second phase of the deal, with Suzuki set to be loaned outright to Juventus for one season—a solution that also suited coach Luis Enrique, who did not want to create competition between the posts with Safonov already the undisputed starter.

The Bianconeri had been working intensively on this deal after seeing several other options fall through in the preceding weeks. In fact, Juventus had been turned down by Alisson, Mile Svilar—whom Roma deemed unsellable despite a €40 million offer—and Mike Maignan, before focusing all their efforts on the Parma goalkeeper as their top priority.

The issue of outgoing transfers also remains to be resolved: the sale of Michele Di Gregorio, valued at around 15 million euros, was considered essential to finance the purchase of the new goalkeeper. Valencia had contacted Juventus, showing concrete interest in the former Monza player, while in the background, Marseille had also emerged as a possibility, with the French club ready to include midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg—who had already been scouted by Juventus during the last winter transfer window—in the deal.
