Monza Transfer Market: Battle for the Goalkeeper Spot—It’s Not Just Törnqvist
As for Monza—a team that has shown spirit but been unlucky in its first two Serie A matches (0 points, following losses to Inter and Udinese)—one of the most pressing issues is the goalkeeper position. Semuel Pizzignacco was loaned to Carrarese, but Demba Thiam also failed to impress in the subsequent match against Udinese: his mistake led directly to the Friulians’ 2-1 goal. For this reason, Monza is taking decisive action.
The player currently attracting the most attention is Noel Törnqvist of Como. However, the 24-year-old Swede would represent a solution with limited experience in Italy’s top flight. This is also why the club has reportedly resumed talks with Milan regarding Pietro Terracciano. At 36 years old and with nine consecutive seasons in Serie A under his belt, the former Fiorentina player would bring greater experience and reliability to the position.
Regarding Pizzignacco, the Brianza-based club has officially announced the transfer of the goalkeeper, born in 2001, to Carrarese on a temporary basis through June 30, 2027, with a simultaneous renewal of his contract with Monza through June 30, 2029. Since joining Monza in the summer of 2024, Pizzignacco has made 10 Serie A appearances for the Biancorossi, the most recent of which came in a 4-1 loss to Inter on opening day.
Törnqvist, for his part, is a well-known figure among Swedish soccer insiders. Signed by Como in 2025, he was loaned to Mjällby, where he helped the team win the league title. The Como-based club is now considering another loan move, and Monza has firmly entered the race. Fun fact: The young goalkeeper has been wearing a protective helmet since he was 16, after hitting his head against a goalpost. This choice was inspired by his idol Petr Šech and was also driven by a desire to reassure his mother.
On the other hand, interest in Jacob Zetterström—the Swedish goalkeeper born in 1998 who plays for Derby County and was recently seen in goal for the Swedish national team at the World Cup—has definitively cooled off: he is now considered too difficult a target to sign.
The need to make changes in goal had already been strongly emphasized by head coach Ivan Juric himself following the loss to Inter: “The team needs to be strengthened in various positions on the field. I expect a lot from the transfer market; if we want to avoid relegation, we need to make moves in every area of the team.” These words sound even more urgent after the home loss to Udinese, following which Juric commented bitterly: “Our first half was perfect; unfortunately, we brought those goals on ourselves. In the second half, we didn’t play well for a quarter of an hour, but then we got back into it; we need to be more ruthless.”
