Isaiah Thomas reaches out, and a major European club responds: “Come join us”

The possibility of seeing Isaiah Thomas play in European basketball continues to spark curiosity among fans and insiders. In recent hours, Zalgiris Kaunas has also picked up on the idea, responding with a touch of humor to the former NBA All-Star’s comments. The point guard has in fact expressed a desire to spend at least one season in Europe once his time in the United States comes to an end, opening the door to the possibility of testing himself against European basketball.

The Lithuanian club immediately seized the opportunity to extend an invitation to him via its social media accounts: “How about coming to the sidelines at Zalgirio Arena to experience the ultimate European basketball atmosphere?” Standing 1.75 meters tall, the former Celtics player spent twelve seasons in the NBA, earning two All-Star Game selections and a spot on the All-NBA Second Team. Over his career, he averaged 17.5 points and 4.8 assists per game, reaching his peak during the 2016–17 season in Boston, which he finished with 28.9 points and 5.9 assists per game.

In recent years, his name has been linked to European clubs on several occasions, though the rumors never materialized into a transfer. Now, however, he seems more open to the idea of playing outside the United States, with the chance to experience firsthand a style of basketball characterized by very passionate atmospheres and a different way of approaching games. Zalgiris’ invitation, though phrased in a joking tone, has inevitably drawn attention. Kaunas is one of the most passionate basketball cities in Europe, and the Zalgirio Arena is known for the atmosphere created by its fans.

It therefore remains to be seen what the next step in the 37-year-old’s career will be. If his desire to play in Europe were to turn into a concrete decision, there would be no shortage of possible destinations. In the meantime, a first invitation has already arrived from Kaunas.
