Inter: There’s one absence in Madrid, but it’s not a player

Calcio e Finanza notes that this decision is linked to current Spanish regulations governing the promotion and sponsorship of companies operating in the gaming and betting sectors. In recent years, Spanish legislation has introduced particularly strict restrictions, with direct consequences for sponsorships in the world of sports and, in particular, soccer.

The relevant regulation is Royal Decree 958/2020 of November 3, 2020, which took effect two days later and addresses commercial communications related to gambling activities.

Specifically, Article 12 regulates sponsorships and prohibits the display of gambling operators’ brands on jerseys and other sports uniforms. The restrictions also apply to other areas: an operator’s name may not be used to identify a sports facility, nor may it be included in the official name of a team or competition.
