Spain’s triumphant debut at Qatar 2022 World Cup
Spain impresses on debut at the Qatar 2022 World Cup: Luis Enrique’s team sends a signal to rivals by scrambling Costa Rica with a round 7-0 win without argument.
The Central Americans offered little resistance against the Red Furies, who confirmed all their quality and dominated the match from start to finish: in the 12th minute Dani Olmo opened the scoring, served by an amazing Gavi, best on the field. In the 22nd minute Asensio doubled with a volley on an assist from Jordi Alba, and in the 31st minute Ferran Torres on a penalty awarded for a foul by Duarte on Alba scored the tris.
In the second half Costa Rica’s collapse is definitive: Torres scores his personal double by taking advantage of a mistake by the South American defense, then Gavi scores the well-deserved fifth goal, an outside volley off Morata’s soft cross. The Barcelona star is the first class of 2004 to score in a World Cup, and the third youngest in the history of the rainbow championship.
Spain didn’t slow down, in the final came Soler’s 6-0 in the 89th minute and Morata’s 7-0 in the 93rd minute. In the Group E standings, they are now tied at the top with Japan on 3 points, Germany and Costa Rica are on zero.
