Carlos Alcaraz is still at the center of debate in the tennis world following his shocking third-round exit from the Shanghai Masters 1000. The Spaniard, who was sidelined for four and a half months this season due to a wrist injury that also forced him to miss Roland Garros and Wimbledon, has once again voiced his concerns about the increasingly packed ATP Tour schedule following his loss in China.

This issue, incidentally, has resurfaced following Jannik Sinner’s announcement that he has decided to end his 2026 season early. Alcaraz, specifically, has pointed the finger at the excessive number of commitments demanded of players: according to the champion from Murcia, one of the main causes of the numerous injuries plaguing the tour is precisely the growing number of tournaments and matches imposed by the schedule.

Although Alcaraz’s comments have garnered widespread support among colleagues and industry insiders, they haven’t convinced everyone. Among the most critical voices is that of former British tennis player Naomi Broady, a commentator for Sky Sports UK: “I find it hard to be particularly sympathetic to this argument when you’re participating in the Six Kings Slam, the Laver Cup, and other exhibition events organized throughout the year,” she said, in no uncertain terms.

The former English player did, however, acknowledge that the issue is complex and multifaceted. According to Broady, the top players on the tour shouldn’t be forced to play every single tournament of the season, even if their absence can have economic and sporting repercussions on the entire sport. Her position, however, was very clear in her conclusion: “Don’t like the schedule? Take a week off.”

The issue, however, continues to divide fans and industry insiders, as well as current and former players. On one hand, there are those who believe the ATP schedule has become excessively demanding and that frequent injuries are proof of this; on the other hand, there are those who point out that many of the circuit’s top players still choose to add lucrative exhibition matches to their official schedules. And in the background looms the case of Jannik Sinner, whose decision to end his season early has forcefully brought the issue back into the spotlight.
