Fiorello, a surprise proposal for Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner’s absence will also take a toll on the Italian national tennis team, which is set to defend the nation’s honor after winning three consecutive Davis Cups. Italy has no intention of giving up, and in 2025 it managed to win the title even without the support of the world’s number one player, although none of our tennis players are currently enjoying a particularly strong run on the tour.

Stepping forward—jokingly—is the entertainer Fiorello, who, in an interview with *Sorrisi e Canzoni*, volunteered to replace Jannik Sinner: “I’m a regular viewer of SuperTennis, which is the channel for us tennis buffs. I’ve already told Italian Tennis Federation President Angelo Binaghi that I’m available to replace Sinner in the Davis Cup.”

“But I don’t want to play. I’ll sit on the bench as a good-luck charm,” the radio and TV host—a huge tennis fan—continued ironically.

The South Tyrolean champion, sidelined by a knee injury that had already prevented him from competing in the U.S. Open, announced he would take a break until next year with the goal of returning to 100% fitness by early 2027. For his recovery, he has decided to entrust his care to Dr. Herbert Schoenhuber, co-founder of Physioclinic and former president of the FISI medical commission. Years ago, the orthopedic surgeon played a decisive role in Sofia Goggia’s recovery; after her serious injury in Cortina, she managed to compete at the Beijing Olympics, where she won silver in the downhill. The clinic itself announced the collaboration in a statement, writing: “We are confident that Jannik, the world’s number one, will also make a full recovery in the coming months and will once again inspire all tennis fans starting next season.”
