Sofia Goggia Has Her Sights Set on a Date for Her Return

Sofia Goggia, after a forced break due to a double infection she contracted in Argentina, has resumed full-scale training at Stelvio in preparation for her return to the World Cup. The skier from Bergamo has set her next goals and has a specific date in mind for her return to competition.
The Italian skier will skip her season debut in Sölden and is instead firmly setting her sights on the giant slalom in Killington, United States, scheduled for November 28. Her first downhill race of the season will be in Beaver Creek on December 11. “I’m on the mend; I’ll have to keep taking some medication, but I’m on the right track. The goal is to make it to the North American leg of the season feeling well,” she explained to *La Gazzetta dello Sport*.
“I still have this deep-seated fatigue that’s been plaguing me, which is why I have to pace myself very carefully. When I started training and moving again, after less than an hour my brain would just shut down.”
The virus was a new experience, different from injuries but no less frightening: “I was shaking—shaking really hard. I couldn’t climb stairs anymore, nor could I articulate my words clearly. I was slowed down. I’d draw a blank at times. I’d think of a word and find it right then, but I’d lose my train of thought. I had moments of confusion.”
This season she’ll celebrate the tenth anniversary of her first World Cup victory: “Since then, I’ve always won at least one race every season. In recent weeks, I’ve been able to look back with pride on what I’ve accomplished in my career.”
