Inter Transfer Market: Chivu Reflects on the Fifth Striker, and Mauro Icardi Resurfaces

The loss in the derby against Milan not only left Inter fans disappointed but also reignited discussions about the club’s transfer strategies. Cristian Chivu has opened the door to the possibility of adding a fifth striker to the Nerazzurri roster, after finding himself having to manage an offensive crisis during the 3-1 loss in the city derby. With Lautaro Martinez injured and Ange-Yoan Bonny and Pio Esposito dealing with physical issues, the coach had only Marcus Thuram available as a natural forward.

In the post-match interview, when asked about the need to make moves in the transfer market, Chivu did not rule out this possibility: “That’s a valid point, but it’s too easy to say that when Lautaro is injured and the other two aren’t feeling well.” He then added: “We’ll give it some thought.” These remarks immediately reignited speculation about a possible signing as early as the winter transfer window.

Among the names continuing to circulate, Mauro Icardi’s stands out in particular. The former Nerazzurri captain has never hidden his desire to return to Milan to bring his time with Inter—which ended in 2019 on a particularly turbulent note—to a different conclusion: “Returning to Inter would be special. I had some important years there; wearing that jersey and the captain’s armband helped shape who I am. The ending was painful, and I’d like to be able to come full circle in a different way,” the Argentine forward recently stated.

This amounts to a genuine self-nomination, though it has not yet garnered any concrete interest from the club’s management. According to Fabrizio Romano, in fact, Inter never seriously considered bringing Icardi back to the Nerazzurri during the summer or even in September. The club believed it already had four strikers, which was sufficient, and, if adding a fifth, would have preferred a player with different characteristics than those of a traditional center forward.
