Three days after the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel, the Tenerife soccer player who died following a cardiac arrest caused by a violent collision during stoppage time of the Segunda Division match against Andorra, the striker’s family has decided to break their silence, on the sidelines of the funeral service held Thursday in Navahermosa—the town where he grew up—with a moving message of gratitude.

The statement, read to reporters by the player’s representative, Manuel Hernandez, is addressed to all those who have expressed their sympathy to the family of the ill-fated soccer player in recent hours: “There aren’t enough words to thank everyone for every message, every phone call, and every gesture of affection we are receiving. We want to extend our gratitude to everyone who has remembered him—his teammates, friends, fans, and all the clubs that have sent their condolences following the tragedy.”

The message also highlights the profound impact Jesus de Miguel had on those who knew him. “Feeling so much affection for Jesus and seeing the mark he left on so many people is something we will always carry with us. We are proud of the affection, concern, and expressions of support following what happened.”

The family then appealed for discretion during this sensitive time: “We ask, with the utmost respect, that our privacy—and that of everyone who is supporting us during this time—be respected. We need to grieve in the peace and quiet that a situation like this requires.”

The statement concludes with one final, heartfelt tribute to the soccer player: “He leaves behind a void that is impossible to fill, but also an immense legacy in the hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to share their lives with him. Thank you for loving him, for remembering him, and for standing by us.”

Meanwhile, the soccer world continues to rally around the family and teammates. Tenerife requested and obtained a postponement of its scheduled match against Granada so that the team could say a final goodbye to their teammate, while Andorra, the club involved in the tragic incident, also secured a postponement of its scheduled match against Mallorca.
