United Cup, Matteo Berrettini knocks out another top-10 player
Matteo Berrettini wins again in United Cup
Matteo Berrettini continues his excellent start to 2023 by defeating, in the United Cup, the second top-10 in the space of twenty-four hours: after having beaten Casper Ruud on Tuesday, in fact, the Roman defeated also Hubert Hurkacz, in the context of the challenge between Italy and Poland, which after Berrettini’s victory is on 2-1 for the Azzurri (earlier Lorenzo Musetti beat 6-1, 6-1 Daniel Michalski, while Martina Trevisan could do nothing against No. 1 WTA Iga Swiatek, winning 6-2, 6-4).
Berrettini’s match was by no means easy, however, as the partials show: 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in an hour and 58 minutes of play before he was able to lift his arms to the sky after the last winning point. However, the current number 16 in the men’s rankings reacted to every difficult moment, finally taking the lead in the third set thanks to the break in the sixth game, which Hurkacz was unable to regain.
This makes it three out of three wins at the United Cup for Berrettini: in addition to Hurkacz and Ruud, the Roman had debuted and won against Thiago Monteiro in the last match of the 2022 calendar year.
