Fencing World Cup, all the Azzurri in the main draw
World Fencing Championships, Egypt
On the third day of the 2022 Absolute World Championships in Cairo, the last one dedicated to the preliminary stages, Italy completed its mission to qualify all its athletes to the main draw. This morning, in women’s saber, in fact, Eloisa Passaro and Michela Battiston detached the qualification pass already in the group stage.
Six victories in as many assaults for Eloisa Passaro. With a clear path, following an impeccable conduct of competition, the Veneto saberist of the Fiamme Oro ended the round in seventh place, securing her ticket to Wednesday’s decisive day.
And so did Michela Battiston: the Friulian from Aeronautica had started with a defeat, then found confidence and hits, stringing together a series of five victories and thus managing in turn to fly (from 14th in the rounds) to the main draw without going through direct elimination.
CT Nicola Zanotti’s two blue women’s saber athletes thus join their teammates Rossella Gregorio and Martina Criscio, who have already qualified by ranking, among the top 64 of the World Championships.
