Wimbledon qualifiers: Matteo Arnaldi and Lucrezia Stefanini in the main draw
Last round of the Wimbledon qualifiers with three boys and one girl committed to reach the main draw of the two singles: two of them, Matteo Arnaldi and Lucrezia Stefanini, succeeded.
The 25-year-old from Carmignano, Tuscany, will participate in her second Slam after she went through one round at the last Australian Open; today Stefanini beat 37-year-old Taiwanese Su-wei Hsieh, a doubles specialist but who was world No. 23 in singles ten years ago, 6-2 6-7 7-6 after more than three hours by cancelling a match point at 6-5 in the third set.
Second Slam also for the 22-year-old from San Remo, moreover consecutive after the second round reached at Roland Garros: in the decisive match, which at Wimbledon for men is best of five sets, Arnaldi beat Portugal’s Frederico Ferreira Silva 7-5 6-4 6-4. In contrast, Matteo Gigante, beaten 6-4 6-2 6-2 by Frenchman Harold Mayot, and Mattia Bellucci, defeated 6-3 1-6 6-3 6-4 by Swiss Dominic Stricker, did not make it.
