Camila Giorgi flies to semifinals in Eastbourne
Camila Giorgi flies to the semifinals in Eastbourne, thanks to a victory over Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals. The Marche-based tennis player only needs to win the first set (7-6), and then benefit from the Latvian player’s withdrawal.
Getting off to a strong start immediately is Ostapenko, who wins the break in the opening set and keeps it until 4-3. Here comes Camila’s reaction that recovers the disadvantage and ties at 4-4. It goes point to point until the tie-break, not before, however, the Latvian tennis player calls a medical time out for physical problems. In the tie-break it is always Ostapenko in the lead: however, the Latvian wastes 3 set points while Camila is glacial at the first chance and closes for 10-8.
At this point Ostapenko raises the white flag and retires: the Italian player thus reaches the semifinals where she will face Russian Daria Kasatkina.
