Lorenzo Sonego candid about derby with Matteo Berrettini
A few weeks after their first-round match at the ATP 250 in Stuttgart, Lorenzo Sonego and Matteo Berrettini will face each other again in the first round at Wimbledon.
The Piedmontese tennis player, speaking to Sky Sports microphones, confessed that he would gladly avoid having to challenge his friend Matteo again: “It’s unfortunate to face each other twice in a row in the first round in such a close time. There are few chances out of 128 to meet him specifically. He is one of my greatest friends, we both really want to do well in this tournament. He did his best result here in his career. It’s something special to play here and I’m sorry to play against him specifically.”
“Living with this kind of injury is not easy, he has always managed in his career to get back to the top in a very short time, proving to everyone that he will recover. This time he needed a little more time, but he is definitely a tennis player who can regain his energy and find something inside that allows him to express his best tennis,” he added on Berrettini’s physical problems.
“When I enter the court I no longer see him as a friend but as an opponent. You no longer have to look at who is on the other side of the net, but I have to find a way to put him in trouble,” Sonego concluded.
