F1 Ferrari: Spaniards furious over Sainz, Vasseur retorts
A full-frontal attack on Ferrari has been unleashed in Spain after the Maranello team’s decision to keep Charles Leclec ahead of Carlos Sainz in Hungary last weekend. The Cavallino’s strategies at the Hungaroring did not go down well with many Iberian publications, which spoke of a Frederic Vasseur who openly favored the driver from the Principality.
However, the team principal in a press conference wanted to respond by explaining that Ferrari only thought about protecting the team’s result: “It was the best way to protect the team’s result. Considering that Sainz had to start on the softs and looking at the tire wear, Leclerc had the potential to finish 20 seconds ahead at the end of the race. It means the decision was right.”
“Before the call though, no one can predict whether there will be a gun issue or a penalty. It is always easy to look back at the race after the checkered flag,” warned Vasseur.
Sainz after the race avoided controversy and in recent weeks has always downplayed the issue of renewing his contract, which expires in 2024. The Spaniard decided to postpone any decision until next winter.
