The Italian track and field team on Sunday celebrated Massimo Stano’s stunning gold medal in the 35-kilometer march at the World Championships in Eugene.
Stano, who had won the most valuable metal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the 20 km, completed the march in 2 hours, 23 minutes and 14 seconds, ahead of Japan’s Masatora Kawano and Sweden’s Perseus Karlstrom.
After the success, celebrated wearing the tricolor as a cape, Stano spoke to the microphones of ‘Rai Sport’ without hiding his emotion: “Today I gave more than I had, at the end I had no more energy but I wanted this medal and I would never give up.”
“I didn’t even get a yellow card, I ran a clean and precise race,” he added. “I am happy because this is a very important result not only for me but also to the march movement. To whom do I dedicate the victory? To my family but also to Antonella Palmisano, who could not be here due to injury. I am sure she will come back stronger than before.”
