ATP Umag, Lorenzo Musetti suffers but gives himself the first derby
The Carrara tennis player prevailed in three sets with a score of 6-2 3-6 6-1.
Redolent of the greatest satisfaction of his still very young career – his success in the Hamburg tournament will remain forever etched in the Tuscan tennis player’s mind – Lorenzo Musetti returned to the court in Umag, Croatia, for the ATP 250 tournament round of 16. His opponent, Slovenia’s Bedene – number 283 in the world rankings – should not have been a difficult obstacle, yet the Italian struggled more than expected after a first set closed safely at 6-2.
In the second partial, the Tuscan’s opening break seemed the prelude to a quick conclusion to the match, but Musetti had a lapse in concentration that allowed his opponent – who took to playing at full strength . a chance to get back into the match. And so it is. The Slovenian wins the second set 6-3.
In the third and decisive set Musetti is back in Hamburg mode, burying his opponent to the tune of winning strokes and breaks: 6-1 and match on ice. Now, in the next round, it’s Marco Cecchinato, for the first of two possible derbies the world number 31 might face in Umag. Musetti is in fact on the same side of the draw as Jannik Sinner, his possible opponent in the semifinals.
