Weather on Giro d'Italia, changes the route of the sixteenth stage
Heavy snowfall has forced organizers to change the route of the 16th stage of the Giro d'Italia. Already on Monday, the Extreme Weather Protocol Commission called to decide on the conditions of today’s stage had met, foreseeing three options.
The first was "Carrying out Normal Stage" the second was "As agreed with RCS at the request of the CPA, the following three vehicles will distribute raincoats/heat clothes to riders who request them, to provide additional support to riders: a. Broom car – b. Car Race Direction n° 3 – c. Car Race Direction n° 4. A parking area will be created at the top of the Giogo di Santa Maria (after 50.2KM) to give runners an opportunity to change clothes. The race will be neutralized for 3 minutes. This action will beà in effect in the climb of the Giogo di Santa Maria before or at the 40th kilometer" the third was "In case of extreme weather conditions, the stage willà be neutralized until a place where safety conditions" are met.
At 9 a.m. the Commission è met and at 10 a.m., given the conditions at that time, decided to implement Option 2 with the athletes'opposition. A few minutes before the start, weather conditions deteriorated further and so the Commission decided to fall back on Option 3.
The stage will have its typical start and procedures in Livigno. From there it will start in a parade towards the Munt Raschera Tunnel. The riders will stop and change before the border with Switzerland. The real start will beà in Prati allo Stelvio as per the chronotable.
