Matteo Berrettini explained his troubles
Matteo Berrettini è was narrowly defeated in three sets in the second round of the US Open by U.S. Taylor Fritz. L'Azzurro after struggling in the first two partials è collapsed sharply in the third: "You have to congratulate your opponent. He played a crazy match today and simply è was better than me. I would like to watch the match again, but I do not remember two free errors in a row by him".
"In my opinion he is worth moreù than the ranking he has, è a player always to be avoided in these conditions. Also, when I saw that they closed the roof I realized that it would be even moreù complex; the conditions change a lot, with the’humidity; the ball moves less in the’air and paradoxically the conditions become slower".
L'Azzurro, however, revealed that he had physical problems even before the tournament began: "It's been a real shame I wasn't able to train and play as much as I wanted to before I got here. I had phlebitis in a vein in my calf, this was missing from the list…. I didn’t even know what it was, it è hardened and I thought it was the muscle. Now it’s getting better, it didn’t bother me as much in the tournament but it did bother me in preparing for the tournament".
"I am proud that I was able to play and go beyond the pain and discomfort. Given my history there’è always the fear that it could get worse, instead è it was an important mental test. Obviously I did not lose because of that, but training poorly ahead of a Slam is è never the ideal thing".
